gas furnacesWhile a gas furnace isn’t the first thing you think of in sunny Southwest Florida, there are those occasional chilly nights when that cozy heat is needed. So how long should you expect your gas furnace to last?

According to Energy Star, a furnace can be expected to last 10 to 15 years, though several factors effect just how long your own equipment will fare. These include maintenance, hours of use and environmental conditions.

When you get a new furnace installed, make sure the HVAC technician clearly explains how to maintain the gas furnace so it not only runs well but ensures a long life. Most gas furnaces are Energy Star certified, so they’re already saving you money. Keeping them well maintained will make that savings go even further.

Basic Furnace Maintenance

  • Annual cleaning of the motor and blower - It’s probably best to let a professional handle these chores. A maintenance appointment will include an in-depth look to ensure all parts are operating effectively and efficiently.
  • Changing the air filter – The air filter should be checked regularly and replaced when dirt and dust has begun to accumulate. Changing filters is a pretty simple procedure, as long as you know where the filter goes in the unit. Be sure to purchase the right MERV rating for your system, or ask an HVAC professional for help. Some thermostats will alert homeowners that an air filter change is needed, though most simply add it to their DIY list every quarter or so.
